¨Opportunity (ob portu)¨

I read the following text in a book:

In the days before modern harbors, a ship had to wait for the flood tide before it could make it to port. The term for this situation in Latin was ob portu, that is, a ship standing over “off a port,” waiting for the moment when it could ride the turn of the tide to harbor. The English word opportunity is derived from this original meaning. The captain and the crew were ready and waiting for that one moment for they knew that if they missed it, they would have to wait for another tide to come in.

This passage teaches us the essential lesson that opportunities are available to everyone in life, but the importance lies in whether we can grasp the given opportunities. In regards to this truth, Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 states, ¨There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot¨. This passage states that there is a time and place for everything, which means that God gave every person a time to plant something for his or her life. And if we take the chance and plant what has been given to us, we will bear much fruit. But whoever does not take the opportunity to plant what is given will not have any fruit to harvest.

To plant at the right time means, as a youth, to study hard during school years; as a young adult, to use the education earned to work hard; and eventually, as an adult, we will be able to bear fruit based on the work we did.

Furthermore, the Bible tells us that even though we might have wasted our youth and missed the opportunities that were given to us, it is still never too late. Even now, God gives us the chance to plant for the future. Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, ¨He has made everything beautiful in its time¨. This verse tells us that God gives us opportunities all the time. What kind of opportunities are we talking about? We can find the answer in Ecclesiastes 3:12, ¨I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.¨ This tells us that if we plant good works today, we will harvest good works in the future. To do good means to love God by obeying Him and love our neighbors as we love ourselves. If we can do this, even by small measures, I believe we will be able to bear much fruit.

Therefore, instead of being dismayed or regretting the time we may have wasted, let us give thanks for the season of new opportunities God gives us and live day by day without any regrets.

Sincerely,
Pastor David Lee
