“What it means to worship God”

James Packer said the following about worship:
To worship God is to recognize His worth or worthiness; The Bible calls this activity “glorifying God” or “giving glory to God,” and views it as the ultimate end, and from one point of view, the whole duty of man (Ps. 29:2; 96:6; 1 Cor. 10:31). Scripture views the glorifying of God as a six-fold activity: praising God for all that He is and all His achievements; thanking Him for His gifts and His goodness to us; asking Him to meet our own and others’ needs; offering Him our gifts, our service, and ourselves; learning of Him from His word, read and preached, and obeying His voice; telling others of His worth, both by public confession and testimony to what He has done for us.

From this passage, we can see that worship is acknowledging the worthiness of God as we reflect on all the things He has accomplished for us. Therefore, whenever we worship, we must give Him our complete focus throughout the entire service. Everything that is included in a worship service is a different way to express God’s worthiness. Thus, those who organize worship services must make preparations with God at the center of it all. In other words, when we prepare for worship service, we should not put the focus on what we like but on what would please God. This also means that the location and style of worship should be what pleases God, not us. People these days like to worship in an ambience similar to that of a theatrical stage or concert hall with flashing lights, stage props and all. They try to make people feel as if God is present by creating this kind of atmosphere. However, once they are no longer in this artificially created atmosphere, they will be unable to feel God’s presence. Beloved Church, I believe that the kind of worship atmosphere God desires is a modest place we can focus on Him. And those who gather there to worship believe that God is present among them. When we worship God with this kind of faith, God will receive our worship, and we will be able to experience His presence.

There is one more thing we can consider as we reflect on James Packer’s words. We might think that if we cannot see or hear, we cannot worship God at all. However, it is more important that we express the worthiness of God than how we do so with our eyes and ears. Thus, those who cannot see can still worship by acknowledging God’s worthiness as they hear and sing praises to Him. And those who cannot hear can still glorify God through what they see and by confessing that God is worthy with their lips. The most important thing in worship is to glorify God by acknowledging He is worthy with our hearts. This is why the Bible says that God does not accept sacrifices that are offered without heart. For this reason, we must remember that no matter how marvelous the stage and worship place might be, if our hearts are not in worship, God will not accept it. Therefore, every time we worship, we, as true worshippers, must trust in His presence and worship Him with all our hearts in spirit and in truth. Even those who are worshiping online at home due to the current coronavirus pandemic must worship God with all our hearts, acknowledging the worthiness of God. In doing so, may we experience God’s living presence every time we worship.
