Things to forget, and things to remember

Someone wrote the following titled, Forget & Remember:

Forget each kindness that you do as soon as you have done it.
Forget the praise that falls to you the moment you have won it.
Forget the slander that you hear before you can repeat it.
Forget each slight, each spite, each sneer, whenever you may meet.
Remember every promise made and keep it to the letter.
Remember those who lend you aid and be a grateful debtor.
Remember all the happiness that comes your way in living.
Forget each worry and distress; be hopeful and forgiving.
Remember good, remember truth,
Remember heaven is above you.
And you will find, through age and youth, that many will love you.

This passage helps us realize what we should focus on as we live our lives. According to this text, we should especially pay no attention to the negative things we might hear about ourselves. Throughout our lives, we hear many adverse comments. We are evaluated based on how well we do something, our appearances, personalities, and work performances. However, I think the way we live today is more important than those kinds of evaluations. People’s opinions quickly fade away and are forgotten, but the way we live determines the fruit we would bear in the future.

People easily judge the appearances of others and say whatever they want. In doing so, many get hurt. This happens everywhere, since those who live in sin enjoy gossiping without thinking about the consequences. But if we were to take every word personally in this world, it will be very difficult to live with a sane mind. Thus, we should consider gossip as the wind that blows away and instead focus on setting our lives on the right track.

Also, according to the passage above, rather than recalling the good we have done to others, it is more important to remember the favor we have received. When we live like this, we will be able to able to show kindness to others without getting disappointed or upset at their response. As a result, there will be peace wherever we may be. There is a saying that kindness is contagious. When I show kindness to others, my surroundings will be filled with acts of kindness as well. Also, I think forgetting the mishaps in life and counting our blessings is the way to live a happy life. When we focus on the unhappiness in our lives, we become filled with even more unhappiness. But when we count our blessings, our happiness will be doubled.

Therefore, we must remember that it is up to us whether we make our lives become riddled with unhappiness and complaints or filled with happiness and blessings. The Bible tells us to “always rejoice, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Therefore, I pray that we would try to live according to this passage this week.
