Character Endures

Horace Greeley once wrote, “Fame is a vapor, popularity an accident.  Riches take wings.  Only one thing endures—character.”  I think this statement by Horace tells us what our goal in life should be.  Many people put a lot of importance on building their reputation.  We can see that this is true because everyone has the desire to look good in front of others.

Recently, I heard a story from a church elder who manages a nail salon.  He said that the nail salon would not do well in September.  When I asked him the reason, he said that when the weather gets cold, people would wear long sleeves and socks; so, they would not come to get their nails done.  As I listened to this elder’s story, I realized that people do not invest a lot in things that are not visible to others.  It is because people think that what is unseen does not really influence the way others view them.

The Bible states that we should adorn our hearts, not our outward appearances.  This is because the Word tells us that God does not judge us based on our appearances, but He looks at our hearts. Just like Horace said in the quote above, fame and popularity disappear like vapor.  When someone younger and more talented appears, the once popular and famous ones will soon be forgotten.  It is the same with wealth.  In history, we can see that wealth does not stay in one place all the time, but it moves from place to place.  This is because life is short.

Ecclesiastes 2: 18-20 states, “I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me, and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.  So, I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun”.  This passage is stating that when we die, since life is short, we would have to leave everything behind to someone else.  But nobody knows whether that person will handle everything wisely or squander it all away.  Thus, the wealth we store up cannot grow continually.  However, if we have a Christ-like heart, we will be able to bear eternal fruit both here on Earth as well as in heaven.  This is why the Word of God tells us to be renewed in the spirit of our minds and put on a new self. A person who puts on a new self is not one who chases after fame, popularity, or wealth, but is someone who follows Christ who lives within.  Therefore, I hope that we can live as renewed people like this and thereby bear good fruit eternally.

Blessings,
